Brian's swing

What a fantastic day of high competitive Doubles Grass Reverse Coed volleyball. We had two divisions going on a beautiful day. We got lucky that the weather held up for the entire day. So lets start with the A/BB division shall we…

After pool play, the teams were ranked as follows:

June / Matt

1. Matt Dozier / June Burney (pictured above)
2. Jonathon Barbaree ‘JB’ / Melissa Schmitz
3. Todd Shoenfelt / Maria Horstmann
4. Dave Pitts / Jackie Flynn
5. Jacob Yates / Rachel Ecke
6. Christian Allemand / Jordan Rooks
7. CJ Donnelly / Hannah Kriscovich

Matt / June received a ‘bye’ for the first round. The number #2, #3, #4 seeds all advanced into the semi-finals during their matches. The semi-finals were set and ready to rumble: #1 – Matt / June verses #4 – Dave / Jackie and #2 – JB / Melissa verses #3 – Todd / Maria. In pool play, Matt / June defeated Dave / Jackie 21-12, but this time Dave / Jackie were ready. Matt / June struggled in this match against Dave / Jackie. The power of Pitts came into play (as shown below).

Pitt's power

In the end, the #4 seed of Dave / Jackie prevailed over the undefeated #1 seed of Matt / June…25-17.

In the other semi-final game, the #2 seed JB / Melissa played against the very vocal m**her f****n team of Todd / Maria seeded #3. Through their experience and loud f****n shout outs to themselves, #3 seed of Todd / Maria advanced into the da*n finals against Dave / Jackie.

The finals was set for a full match, 2 out of 3 games – games to 21 points win by 2 points…third game if necessary to 15 points. So the #3 seed of Todd / Maria verses the #4 seed of Dave / Jackie. As expected, let the foul language begin…with their tricky f****n shots and their quick a** hustle to get to the f****n ball, Todd / Maria defeated Dave / Jackie in two straight f****n games to win…21-10 and 21-17. Congratulations to Todd / Maria for winning their first tournament since Maria’s graduation from Emory. Welcome back, Maria…

Todd / Maria

As far as the Open/AA division, we had some tough but very entertaining competition to watch throughout the entire day. We also had a team representing Raleigh, North Carolina…like to welcome Brian Murray and Penelope Tipiana to Atlanta. It is always great to see new faces and new talent come into our volleyball community…with that said, our visiting team from Charlotte was the dominating team in pool play – here are the results:

1. Brian Murray / Penelope Tipiana
2. Duane Holben / Lindsay Paroczai
3. Ryan Hojnacki / Chibuzo Aguocha
4. Chris Burney / Alison West
5. Jeremy Swanson / Jaime Butler-Dawson
6. Wes Fincher / Courtney McCluskey
7. Scott Brown / Kelby Jones

With Brian / Penelope getting the ‘bye’, the other seeds had to compete for the last 3 positions. The #2 seed of Duane / Lindsay and the #3 seed of Hoj / Chewy advanced into the semi-finals. The battle for the 4th play-off position was a good one as the #4 seed of Burney / Alison went against #5 seed of Jeremy / Jaime. Back and forth it went point for point, but in the end Jeremy / Jaime pulled through with a win 25-23. The semi-finals were set as the #1 seed of Brian / Penelope played the #5 seed of Jeremy / Jaime and #2 seed of Duane / Lindsay played the #3 seed of Hoj / Chewy. Both teams agreed to play a full match (2 out of 3 games) since there was plenty of time in the day for it. In the end of these matches, the team from Raleigh, Brian / Penelope and the team to represent Atlanta, Hoj / Chewy were ready for the battle of their lives. In pool play, Brian / Penelope won 25-22 over Hoj / Chewy…would it be the same again? Both teams were equally matched as far as power, defense, and skill. The crowd was also looking forward to this match as they stayed till the very end. In the first game, Hoj / Chewy had the edge as well as the crowd supporting them. The game ended 21-17 with Hoj / Chewy winning. In the second game, Brian / Penelope started with a 3 point lead as they continued to put the press on Hoj / Chewy…Brian / Penelope never looked back winning 21-15. The third game was as close as they come…yeah – seriously. At 12-12, the game belong to either team. But Team Raleigh had the edge as they took a 2-point lead at 14-12. Team Atlanta received serve and sided out making it 13-14…Hoj / Chewy had to play defense to tie the game. Serve went to Brian and he bombed away but not without Hoj touching the ball…unfortunately, it landed out which game the match to Brian / Penelope. Once again, Hoj walks away with another second place finish this season. This match in my opinion as well as others who watched on the sideline was one of the BEST MATCHES I have seen since I first move here back in 1996. Congratulations to Brian and Penelope for a fantastic finish as well as an undefeated record. We look forward to seeing you guys come back and defend your title.

Penelope / Brian
