The Coed Sand Tournament started with a full 10-team roster. The online registration/payment process began to be useful for those who wanted to play in this first tournament format. 3 out of the 10 teams are not only teammates for that day but teammates for life: The Bakers (Greg and Judy), The O’Keefes (Rich and Terrie) and the newly formed Spillers (Rod and Cheryl) – Congratulations guys and welcome back. One advice that I am sure Rich and Greg could give Roddy is to be sure not to wear your wedding band on the court…see the first video posted in the photo album of this tournament. And the winner of the found wedding band – Tim Carlson who received his reward with a big kiss on the cheek from the groom.
Pool play consisted of 4 matches for all teams (2 games to 21 points, no cap). After a long day of pool play, the following teams advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Coed Sand Tournament:
Yellow Court:
• Chad Borton / Elaine Sha – Advance to the Semi-Finals with a ‘bye’ in the Quarterfinals
• Tracey Pressley / Kim Dalimonte – Advance to the Quarterfinals
• Rich O’Keefe / Terrie O’Keefe – Advance to the Quarterfinals
• Eric Shipley / CJ Johnson
• Chris Thorn / Chris Raiford
Red Court:
• Greg Baker / Judy Baker – Advance to the Semi-Finals with a ‘bye’ in the Quarterfinals
• Rich Rainwater / Wendy Saltzman – Advance to the Quaterfinals
• Tim Carlson / Janice Fung – Advance to the Quarterfinals
• Rod Spiller / Cheryl Spiller
• Bill McLochlin / Julie Newcome
As the Quarterfinals (one game to 25, no cap) started, Tracey and Kim defended the yellow court against Tim and Janice. The combination of Tracey’s determination and Kim’s experience proved to be a great combination as they defeated Tim and Janice 25-17. On the red court, Rich (aka Dirty) and Wendy defended their court against the veteran team of Big Rich and Terrie. The quote of the day came from Dirty Rich to his partner Wendy: “Set it anywhere” – throughout the day, Dirty Rich helped out his partner Wendy become a better player…I can’t wait to play with him someday. In the end, the veteran team of Big Rich and Terrie came out on top defeating Dirty Rich and Wendy 25-13.
The Semi-finals were set as the #1 team of Chad and Elaine played against Rich and Terrie and the #2 team of Greg and Judy played against Tracey and Kim. Both games (again one game to 25, no cap) were intense. Chad and Elaine defeated Rich and Terrie 25-16. Tracey and Kim defeated Greg and Judy 25-18.
The teams of Chad/Elaine and Tracey/Kim have played against each other already during pool play with Chad/Elaine defeating Tracey/Kim in both games 26-24 (the longest game of the tournament) and 21-14. As the finals started (again one game to 25, no cap), Tracey and Kim started with an early lead, but Chad and Elaine were not going to give up. After the 15-20 side change, Chad and Elaine were still behind and losing any kind of momentum. In the end, Tracey and Kim defeated Chad and Elaine 25-18. (Sidenote: After the tournament, Tracey called me up to make sure I mention the last hit to win the tournament…happy?)
Congratulations to Tracey Pressley and Kim Dalimonte for winning the first Coed Sand Tournament of the season!!!
